As we get to the pinnacle of the college basketball season and transition into the magnificence of the 2011 baseball season, I figure it is only appropriate to reflect on a few of the most memorable, yet forgotten sports games of all-time. A few of these were put away because of politics, others were shelved just because audiences happen to be far too fickle to give them a chance (pun intended). Nevertheless, this is my checklist of the most unforgettable sports games that nobody speaks about nowadays. Well, we are going to change that right now...
NHL HITZ
NFL blitz meets NHL 2k in this awesome game. This video game is not as forgotten as some, boasting a relatively strong cult following of individuals familiar with the likes of the Shark Tank, Circus Rink, and the ever magnificent Disco Arena (a challenging place for any challenger to go into) but you'd still be hard pressed to get it. The gameplay is definitely awesome and in fact quite solid for a video game that's intended to be outrageous. Here is a trick, do whatever you can to get out to an early lead, and set your defense to zone and "less aggressive." And who can forget the quarrels? Seemingly, so many people. The video game lasted only 2 years.
Barkley Shut Up And Jam
Barkley Shut Up and Jam! This is bound to be a somewhat controversial option, as many would consider that it currently has a reboot and isn't that forgotten. Yet the game was great. Basically, everything you need to understand about the game is on the front cover. It features Charles Barkley and lots of dunking. This game offered something that most game titles don't provide nowadays: simplicity as well as the chance to commit a flagrant foul any time you wished. Travel the nation, taking on players like D-Train from Watts as well as Funky D from Oakland, chain nets, 360 dunks, and awesomely lame music. What more can you ever want in a basketball video game?
ESPN NFL 2K5
All hell broke loose as soon as this video game was launched for the amazingly low price of $19.95. Madden had to respond with a 40% price drop of their own, marking their version of the video game down to $29.99. The series was originally announced when Madden made the decision to not make a version of its series for Dreamcast. Yet, even Madden could not match the game play which NFL 2K5 provided, a video game which seemed incredibly realistic and set the tone for Madden's "Truck Stick" having its maximum tackle feature. Its franchise as well as "career mode" were not close to as solid as Madden, and yes it had a few useless features like first person football and the Crib (which NCAA Football eventually stole for the "dorm room') yet who could forget draft mode together with Mel Kiper, as well as the SportsCenter cutaways? A solid game that for twenty bucks was the steal of the decade. EA's rights to the NFL, and the ESPN license ceases in 2012, which should open the industry back up for this outstanding series.
