Just glance over at your games library. Have you completed all of these games? Are there any of these games that you intended to complete, but didn't because the challenges were just to difficult, or the gameplay just to repetitive? How many RPG's have you spent several hours on, but never got to the end?
I play all of the games I play with one goal in mind and that is to finish it. This could be either because I am having so much fun with it or they are frustrating me so much that I just have to get through them. There is just so much satisfaction that comes from taking out a boss after struggling with it for a long time. But for someone who is always up for these challenges you are sometimes faces with battles where you feel you are up against a totally unrealistic design working against you. All you want to do then is to just skip that part of the game. I never back away from a tough challenge and spend loads of time dedicated to taking down a problem boss, but these difficult situations often results in players not finishing games.
The ultimate goal for game developers is to create an experience that blends challenge with accessibility. How this is achieved is still a wok in progress for the majority of the industry. Most developers still rely on a difficulty level system that allows players to select their skill level at the outset of play. Others implement adaptive AI that adjusts on the fly to your struggles or towering achievements.
Two controversial innovations, which have been received with mixed reaction, were introduced by the vita-chambers in Bioshock and the saving hands of grace in Prince of Persia respectively. These allow players to work thorugh the challenges so much easier. It does however leave you feeling lik eyou cheated a bit. Something just doesn't feel right for me when the penalties for player failure get thrown out the window at will.
If the challenge can be gone by making a few clicks, it just takes the wind out of my sails. This is however a wonderful feature for many gamers out there, who just don't have the skill to get through the difficult sections and they get to enojoy the same reward of winning the battles. The developers are also really happy when this happens as players work through the whole game and can admire all of the years of hard work that went into the development of the game.
Shigeru Miyamoto also detailed another option that would become available on the New Super Mario Brothers game. It is called demo play and I hated it right away. It allows players to switch to this mode if they are stuck in a certain part of the game. They are then taken through this difficult section on auto pilot. They can then continue playing after passing the diifuclt section. I then thought about it and realized that it is probably something that game developers and gamers alike have been dreaming about for ever.
