When you are playing video games you would be working towards a specific goal. For the gamer it would be a rewarding sense of achievement, whereas in real life an employee would benefit from work satisfaction and monetary gain. In order for someone to succeed in both you need to be focused, determined and believe that you would be able to be successful. Working towards such a goal is the basis of showing good management skills.
It does sound a little weird, but there can be no argument that there is a lot of overlapping of the skills needed for both gaming success and management success. If someone is successful at playing video games it does make sense that they have mastered many of the skills necessary to be a good manager.
In the workplace good management requires the co-ordination of your team using good communication skills. Employers often need to delegate work to employees to make sure that goals are achieve as a unit as efficiently as possible. The same goes for many of the video games these days where you are in charge of armies or teams that you need to co-ordinate to ensure you win your gaming battles.
It is absolutely critical that good management is largely reliant on good communication skills. It might be argued that games don't help in developing these abilities as some people might already have them. If you look at it analytically it does make sense that some of these abilities can be brought to the fore through gaming in a fun and relaxed way. People are blessed with many talents, but sometimes these stay hidden as there is no effective way that they are being used.
Although gaming can have a positive effect on the way you manage yourself and others at work, there are some major differences. With a regular job you are under real pressure to perform and reach your goals. This ensures financial stability and the fact that you will keep your job and possibly get promoted over time. When it comes to games on the other hand, the pressure is off and you are only playing for the sense of personal achievement and satisfaction.
As you have seen there are some similarities between games and becoming a better manager. In many cases however the differences are just far to great and there is no correlation between a real job and gaming. It is however interesting to see the many similarities and how gaming ties in in many ways with real life. If you are good at gaming it doesn't however mean that you will definitely good at managing, but there are some definite positive things you can gain from playing games.
