Gaming history was made on June 6 1984. Alexey Pajitnov, who was employed by the Soviet Academy of Sciences created Tetris, one of the most celebrated video games in the history of gaming. The impact of Tetris on popular culture is widespread, as the game is played by men, women and children around the world.
The success of this video game is due to its simplistic game play which is both easy to master and very addictive. There are seven different falling blocks of varying shapes called Tetrominoes. They are named after the letters they resemble: I, J, L, O, S, T and Z.
In 2007, tetrominoes have gained iconic status when a joke entry of the L-shaped tetromino made a surprise win at the GameFAQs' sixth annual Character Battle. The Character Battle is a popularity contest for video game characters nominated by the users of this video game site.
Hirokazu Tanaka is widely known as the creator of the music to Game Boy versions of this popular game. He mainly made musical arrangements from other composer's melodies. Music A from the game is probably the most recognizable of all the tunes from the game. It is basically an instrumental rendition of Korobeiniki, a Russian folk song. Many people will recognize the tune in the movie Snatch, as the theme for "Boris the Blade". It is also used on television as the opening theme to Borat Segdiyev (a character created by Sacha Baron Cohen).
Popular with a variety of musician, Korobeiniki is one of the most widely covered melody. A comical version of this song was produced in 2009 by Pig With the Face of A Boy, a "neo-post-post-music hall anti-folk band" from London.
In a time when many video games have been adapted into feature length films, Black20.com had made a hilarious mock trailer for Tetris-The Movie which they released in April 2008. With the tagline "A brother dies. A hero is born. Get in line for adventure.", this is a spoof trailer set in an alternate universe in which young men and women are compelled to fly in tetromino shaped air crafts in a fight to the death.
Meanwhile, television had decided to take the lead and adapted the video game into a game show. Brain Wall, a segment from a Japanese game show started going viral on video sharing sites, and avid viewers had dubbed it "Human Tetris". The game requires human contestants to go against a giant foam wall. Often the wall has funny cut out holes, and the contestants must get into a formation that will pass through the cut out. Later FremantleMedia was to release their own version of the game show in over 20 countries as Hole in the Wall.
Without a doubt this modest video game has infiltrated all the different aspects of modern popular media. In fact the impact of Tetris on popular culture is so profound that there is even a pattern for a Tetris quilt on the Quilter Geek Blog. It is safe to say that this game will continue to be played by generations of gamers to come.
