Be sure to know you personnel when playing Madden. Check your player ratings to identify strengths. If you want to run the ball, determine if your back is more speed or power. Also know which offensive linemen are the strongest run blockers, and take advantage. Identify your deep threats and look for them when going deep. You would not want to throw bombs to your wide receiver with a meager speed rating.
Make sure to set your audibles. You will find ways to trick your opponent online when you use spread formations to pass and throw in a run play from the same formation. Small quirks like that will keep your opponents honest. Tinker with changing plays from run heavy or pass heavy formations. Often, the other team will pick defenses based on your packages.
You should get used to controlling your line backers and safeties on defense. When they are assigned to zone coverage, use them to help on receivers that you think are being targeted primarily. Never control corners since they are off screen when play begins. Get familiar with defensive controls such as swatting balls with R1 and intercepting with the triangle button.
These should keep you competitive while you get your feet wet. You will learn the nuances with experience, but for now just know how the new features work and your teams before playing.
