When choosing a cell phone, it is no longer about making calls, but what else you can do with the technology. We check our mail, post reminder and play games when its time to relax. It is the game part of the phone that is the most intriguing and the most important for many people, especially those with small children. As popularity of the iPhone grows more apps are becoming available and people are searching for iPhone games for toddlers.
When looking for games to add to your iPhone, think of what your toddler enjoys playing with or looking at, and there is sure to be an app for it. Sesame Street has developed numerous apps for toddlers and older children alike. Some of the most popular are read-a-long books that star Elmo, along with several others centered around Muppet characters. It is important to preview the games, however, as some may be too scary or advanced and simply frustrate your child, rather than entertain.
If your toddler is a lover of animals, there is no shortage of games for them to play. For the younger children, see and say titles can teach them the sounds animals make. There are also match games for older toddlers and young children, where the child is asked to pick a certain animal out or to remember where they placed them. Story books are also a good option, as they can be taught to read and recognize letters and simple words.
The most popular games center on reading and learning to read, and there is certainly no shortage in the number of apps that are geared to teaching reading skills. Alphabet train is a top choice for teaching toddlers early words, and pairing pictures with words. Along the same lines is the popular See and Say model that is modernized for the iPhone and teaches words, sounds, places and animals. Many of the read-a-long books that can be found in iTunes are also available in hard bound books, to make the transition from electronic to paper easy.
While animals and reading are popular themes, many focus on daily activities as well. PBS has created a game that teaches a child about dressing, allowing them to drag clothes to put on a character. This type of game can be used early on, as many toddlers will quickly begin to voice their opinions on what to wear, and can learn how to dress themselves along with their games.
As with most electronics there is concern for overuse and that they are used simply to satisfy a fussing child and not teach them. While this may be the case for anyone, not only children, when used in moderation and with supervision playing games are fun. For some children, especially under the age of two, the idea of playing with the phone may simply be more of doing what mom or dad do. Pressing buttons and talking to people is the most fun they can have.
It is not only the games that are helpful, but other functions of the phone as well. Allowing older toddlers and young children use the phone to call a parent or use the camera while you are out teaches them about responsibility and the even evolving technology. It is this technology that they will need to know about when they begin school.
So if your childs choice is reading, or seeing what animals makes what sound, there is an application or game that can satisfy them. Letting your child use the iPhone can help them learn, but as with all things making sure it is used correctly. If they become upset when it is taken away, the lesson may be that they need to be taught about sharing and taking turns. Whatever you decide, the possibilities are endless.
