Everyone, every age has some experience with an arcade. Whether at a local pizza party or some large amusement park, new or old, arcades have been a part of our culture for quite some time. For many, and experience with arcade and redemption games have defined their childhoods. Let it be known, however, that there are tons of nostalgia in the following paragraphs that will cause you to run out and turn a twenty dollar bill into quarters.
The fighting game can be found in any social area. There was always a group of people, mostly middle school kids, watching each other compete with their friends, all trying to determine who was the best. As if competing in the Olympics, each contestant would grip their round joystick and sweat out the blows, just trying to block out the pressure of their entire school class watching intently.
The shooting game is similar to the fighting game, as it is another show of skill. This, however, was more attempting to look suave while showing off extraordinary skill with a fake, plastic, orange weapon. Many places had multiple gun games, which was perfect since each one had its own uniqueness that made them all special, and all fun.
Sometimes the video games were not for everyone. Luckily almost every arcade had redemption games where you could still spend your quarters, but this time with a goal in mind. Do different tricks and test your skill to gather tickets which were redeemable at the counter for some of the most unique things you can think of.
Skee ball and all it's variations could be found anywhere there was a ticket booth. Arguably one of the funnest and most popular redemption game, it took a long time to master or a great deal of luck to be able to properly score. No matter what you seemed to do, the ball would always bounce just a little further than you wanted, causing it to bounce off all the other top scoring holes down to the lowly bottom. Of course, there was always to option of climbing the long ball runway and placing the ball in manually, but at the great risk of being banned.
Classic games have been able to survive the throngs of new technology batting cages GTA over the years. Whack-a-mole games are no different. Though it is hard to find actual moles to whack now, there are thousands of variations of the game all out to torment you by being just a little too fast for you. Again, cheating by having a buddy or two was always a very viable option.
When you were finally finished with wasting all of your parent's quarters, it was time to redeem the large bundled mess of tickets. They always had things like televisions or speakers sitting on the top shelf, but in order to reach those, you would need to spend every week there for the whole summer. So you settled with the small stuff like a plastic comb or a bouncy ball you would end up losing the moment you walked outside.
Children used to live at the arcade, and the experiences they had will never be hindered by aging. It is good to see that many of the traditions have stayed true, and it is still possible to find the old arcade games every so often. Hearing the sound of a machine spewing out tickets can never be replicated. The casino's for children can easily be as addicting and even today, you may find yourself tempted to toss a quarter or two at one of these games.
