In the early days of video games the games were very basic and games like Pong, Space Invaders and Pac Man were the popular titles of the time. Anyone could play these games regardless of their age. Things have however changed dramatically as time and technology have both moved on. Games are so much more realistic graphically and as a result parents need to seriously consider the games their children are allowed to play.
The good news for parents is that the gaming industry has put a ratings system in place which should help. The system which was introduced by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board is there to help rate all gaming software. They will clearly show which titles can be played by everyone and which ones are more suited for adults or perhaps teens.
The ratings can be found clearly printed on the front of the games. The majority of games you can buy these days fall into either the E or the M ratings category. The games rate E can be played by anyone. They are games like Maria Cart and Sonic the Hedgehog. These types of games rarely have violence featured in the game. These are then normally something like stomping on a monster or crashing your car. No one would get hurt in these games and the graphics are not filled with blood and gore.
A rating of T would indicate that the game is appropriate for teens. These games are usually of such a nature that teens would be emotionally ready to play such a game. Parents should however help out a little here with the decision making as there may be scenes of violence and realistic crashes through the game.
The games with a M rating are meant to be played by adults as they have a mature theme. The reason for this rating is that the games may contain realistic depictions of violence or nudity and that there can be profanity in the games. Kids regularly try to get their hands on these games as they are forbidden fruit. It is however important that parents stay vigilant in monitoring the game play of their kids.
