3D animation is still a field you can break into without a formal qualification, however you will still need to invest time in self-study whether you use books, CD?s, DVD?s or hands on step by step software programs. If you either don?t have the time, the money or inclination to invest a few years in fulltime study, you can still acquire the skills needed. It may take you longer to establish your career, but with a lot of determination, passion, natural artistic talent, advanced computer skills and a great portfolio, you will get noticed.
Learning the art of 3D animation takes a lot of discipline and hard work, even with the help of desktop applications doing most of the ?work? for you, there are still the fundamentals behind it that you have to master, however, it is a field where results count more than a formal certification.
On the other hand, landing a job without a qualification may be more difficult unless you are either immensely gifted and your reputation precedes you, are highly experienced and can prove it or you have relatives in the business. While there are companies who do not insist on formal training, there are many more who will not even consider hiring unqualified applicants. One way of building up your portfolio and body of work experience is to bypass the formal employment route altogether and become a freelancer.
Not even college graduates have time to learn every discipline in 3D animation ? if you are teaching yourself, it is best that you do not try to learn each and every field right away. The internet is a virtual powerhouse of information about the various fields that make up 3D animation, software packages and training modules. 3D animation is all around us, you do not have to work for a top Hollywood studio in order to create 3D graphics. Do a little research first and decide which field you want to concentrate on before rushing out to buy a computer program and training manuals.
Remember, although there are 3D software packages around that do just about everything for you, you still have to have the skills and aptitude for it. You need to be artistic; you need to be able to express your ideas in sketches and drawings. You need to be able to communicate your ideas into commercial value and you need to have strong computer skills. With these, the world is your oyster. Good luck.
