My company is related to computer designing and programming and I am John: the owner and manager. So what we are doing mostly are software designing. The contracts we are getting are high end kind of. To give a good example would be the one we did for the city: a surveillance software. Twelve months of hard work was necessarily to finish it. And so many hours including the overtime. The current contracts we are getting are not as important though.
As a manager, five people are under me. They are programmers with very good backgrounds. We do specialize ourselves in projects for Windows, Linux and Mac. We are also working the weekends and the staff currently doing that shift are two part-time students. Both of them are also assigned to the evening tasks. My current contract involves a very polished web site. The customer simply wants the best portal around with all the fuzz possible. Since we started working on it, there have been many polishing done on the software. This customer is very close to his project.
In our workplace, only the best computers are used. We have top notch printers and office equipments too. All our programmers are using the iPAQ 4155. This pocket tool is great to keep notes about the current tasks and the project schedule. To communicate between ourselves is very easy with this little gadget. Everyday, my programmers had to be updated on any project changes. Let's say one of them becomes sick.... well, the others need to be fully working as soon as possible without delay.
On our last project, one of my programmer became sick. He was bed ridden for a whole 14 days. The project was near the end and we needed everything to be done quickly and rightly. That time the programmer gave us some good feedback what to do and how to do it. It was the first time such thing happened. We do have every software well coded. But then, the delivery time was short and we could not verify the whole code. My client was expecting the product and I was more than stressed. Since that experience, I learned to keep my staff well updated on the product changes.
I founded that small venture five years ago. I started it small then grow up big enough to handle bigger projects. Our past customers are the main ones giving us more and more contracts. As any good manager I have to keep in touch with my clients, either for business contact or, of course, for anything they need to know on their project status. The office place is downtown. We are next to the business part. My company has a good location. I love to work here. This is a great job and I do enjoy it a lot !
