Whatever you do on the internet as long as you are connected to the outside world you will be using a browser of some description to view the web pages. To put it simply a web browser translates the HTML code into a viewable web page. The two most common browsers being used today are Internet Explorer and Mozilla Fire Fox which has become popular amongst web designers in Malaysia. The Apple Mac has various other webpages that can be used as well as streamlined versions of the above but Safari seems to be the most popular for the Mac at the moment. Some people find different browsers faster and others prefer the set up of slightly slower browsers.
A web designer will need to decide which browser he wants the web page to be more compatible with because the different browsers can interpret web page coding slightly differently. What might show up as perfect in one browser might look a mess in another. A designer will often establish which browser the particular target audience is using.
It has no affect on web pages from where in the world they are designed to how they will be displayed; a designer in Malaysia will have the same results displaying a web page as someone in the USA. What will affect the way a web page is displayed across different browsers is; fonts, pictures, page placement and download speeds and occasionally color.
There are of course fonts that will work in all browsing pages which are why when you view web pages you will notice that they are almost always in the most basic of fonts. If you designed a web page in a more complex of font then it might show up in a different browser as a completely different font.
When a browsing page changes a font on a web page it can have devastating effects on its design. Every type font takes up a certain amount of space, when that space changes it can make everything else on the page shift. Even the smallest shift could put a picture in the wrong place or a table in the wrong alignment.
When you surf the internet, you normally are looking for information and the quicker you can find it the better. As humans we are trained to scan documents in certain ways which is why you will often see a web site logo in the top left corner. If the information has been misaligned by the browser it may make it more difficult for the viewer to extract the information they require.
When a browser takes a long time to load a web page this can put a potential customer off and they might just click away from the page. The general reason for a webpage download time is the pictures; they should be of a size that is compatible with all browsers.
Web designers have a responsibility to ensure that their main audiences are going to get the information that is needed. This is all part of the design process in establishing this, tests are carried out with the target audience to see which browsers are used and then suitability is created.
