Moving to self-storage or just wanting to get rid of some 'stuff'? The cardinal rule of moving should be, "Don't pack anything you don't absolutely need or love." This is the perfect opportunity to take stock of your possessions, and find out whether you own them or they've been owning you. Most of us hang onto things we don't use or need for far too long out of sentiment or lack of time. Be ruthless; do it right this one time and you may never have to do it again.
The benefits of eliminating clutter go far beyond simply having fewer boxes to move. You'll save money by being able to rent or hire a smaller moving van, you'll reduce the amount of time you spend unpacking in the new house, and you'll also free yourself from emotional baggage that you may not even have realized was weighing you down.
Shred old receipts and other papers that no longer need to be kept on hand. Most documents only need to be retained for from one to three years, while a few, such as tax records, should be kept for up to seven years. Check with local and governmental agencies to find out how long each type of document should be kept on hand.
Don't wait till the last minute to get organized. Starting early will make the process less stressful and more productive. Plan to hold one large or several small yard sales to get unwanted items out of your way and recoup some of your moving costs.
Ridding your home of clutter can benefit others as much as it benefits you. Donate clothing, bedding, cookware and other items in good condition to a local charity. Get the kids involved in the process too; help them understand that there are children less fortunate than they are who would derive a lot of joy from those toys they no longer play with and they'll part with them gladly.
Modern technology offers some great tools for clutter elimination. All those recipes and newspaper clippings you've been hanging onto can be scanned and saved to a hard drive or other storage medium. This way you'll have them available for that fabled someday when you're going to have time to use them, or, if someday never comes, at least they're now taking up virtually no space at all.
If you start to feel bogged down by the magnitude of the task before you, try to shift your focus to the end result: a new life in a new home, free from clutter and the stress it creates.
