Well, it's moving time again! Is affordable self-storage in your future? Maybe you're expecting a new baby and need more room. Maybe the kids are grown and now the house is too large. Maybe you've been renting, and now you're ready to purchase your first home. Whatever the reason, most of us will have to pack up and move at least once or twice during the course of our lives.
First up is gathering your supplies. Boxes are the bedrock upon which all moves are built. You'll need them in a variety of sizes, and you'll need lots of 'em. Start dropping by local businesses to ask for boxes they're throwing out as soon as you know you're moving.
Packing materials are a matter of personal preference. You can buy bubble wrap, packing foam, plastic or cloth storage sleeves for dishes; it seems there's a specialty packing medium for virtually every item in your home. Most of us, though, rely on that old standby, crumpled-up newspaper. Some strong packing tape and permanent markers round out the necessities.
Unfortunately, self-packing boxes haven't been invented yet, so you're going to have to do the dirty work yourself. Start early, space out the work, but don't skip a day-establishing a routine will make the task more manageable.
If your home is also your office, you need to take extra precautions to ensure your business and clients suffer as little disruption as possible. Your office should be the last room you actually pack fully, but you can start by organizing your paperwork and equipment, packing up things you're sure you won't need for several weeks, and getting rid of anything you no longer use.
Moving isn't just about packing up everything you own. Really look at each item as you go along, and think about whether it's useful or important enough to justify hauling it to your new location and then unpacking it and putting it away. When looked at this way, many things you thought you just couldn't part with suddenly seem less essential!
Whatever it is that's got you on the move, taking simple steps to keep yourself organized will make the workload more manageable and keep the stress level down.
