When it comes to efficiency, it is something that you have to work at, striving to always get better. If you're not getting better and making improvements, somebody else is and soon they will surpass your abilities. You have to find a way to stay competitive, but keep the profits up so that you continue to grow and prosper. You can always find ways to save money if you look hard enough.
You do not necessarily need to go and cut jobs or reduce the quality of the parts you use. You want to maintain your quality and not let it suffer to save a few dollars. After all, if your quality drops, you can make a few cents more for a while, but eventually you will lose market share and customers because of an inferior product. What you need is to become lean.
Lean is not cutting corners and cutting important elements of the process, but it is to find a better way to do the job with less equipment, less work and less time. You must look for ways to better the process, but without sacrificing quality. Therefore it is difficult to do, it's not as simple as deciding to use a part from China because it is cheaper. You must look at each individual process and determine where the greatest chance of making the improvement lies. It focuses on production and determining what options are cheaper and what is more effective.
Maybe instead of waiting for every hundred pieces of a part to prepare for painting, and painting all of them at the same time before they are moved on to wiring, there may be a better way. What if all parts can be made, then painted individually, as part of an assembly line and workers can begin wiring as it exits the paint booth and instead of having to wait for each piece prior to shipment, you may send them as they are completed.
You can save money by not having to store all of the parts as they wait to ship, by shipping them as they are completed. This also allows you to start selling them before they are all done. This is just one example of a way to begin to examine your processes differently. This approach can work in all aspects of a business. Be smarter with your resources and you do not have to spend so much for storage of all of the extra parts.
