Private investigation has a lot of imagery and cliches attached to it. There is the "lone wolf" investigator who, for one reason or the other is unattached to the government. There is the trusty sidekick/chronicler who manages to either accidentally make discoveries which are crucial to the case or get himself into a situation where he needs rescuing. There is also the scene where the hapless client (often a beautiful blonde) goes to the office of the private investigator to seek his help. However, this last scene is slowly becoming obsolete simply because of the advent of online private investigation
There are two parts to online investigation. First, it involves the use of the internet to contact private investigators, to get them started on the job in the first place. Secondly, it is the actual investigation of crimes and mysteries themselves conducted online.
Let us discuss the first of these. Private Investigation agencies need clients in order to keep the business rolling. This means that they have to advertise. The internet is the best media to advertise in today. This is because it also allows people to contact a private investigation agency directly.
To further encourage clients, there is the fact that they never have to show their face or reveal themselves. A lot of clients value privacy and discretion, and the internet allows this much more than a face to face meeting would. The online agency just needs to know what the job is, and that the client can pay for it; nothing else is necessary.
Another thing that helps encourage clients online is the ease of use. No more tracking down offices in back alleys, and for that matter no more need for the agency to have offices at all, which saves a lot of money for them. It allows clients to contact a private investigator quickly, easily, and at their own convenience, no longer needing to schedule hours to make an in person visit when they can just send a quick email to keep in touch. It gives a much greater feeling of security and control, to know that the PI is just an email away.
Now, the second aspect of online investigation (the solving of crimes themselves committed online) is becoming increasingly important. A lot of criminals are switching to computers to conduct their illegal activities, and so private investigators also need to work online. Private investigators need to be able to work with the tools of the internet, and know the experts to call on to handle the various aspects of online security and protection.
Some crimes are done almost exclusively online now, like ebezzelment or identity theft. Private investigation often requires searching through online records, as well as dealing with computers directly, and needs knowledge about the wys the internet can be manipulated.
Plenty of experts specialize in online security, and a lot of them, perhaps even most of them, work freelance as security consultants. They can either be hired directly, or will be called in to help by the private investigator when the case requires it. A lot of these security experts started out learning the criminals techniques, so they can get into their enemies mind and solve the case with ease.
This is all just an example of how our lives have changed with the internet. There is still crime, and there are still mysteries to solve, and there will always be a job for private investigators - both online and off. Every new technology brings with it new risks, and new opportunities.
